BIOGRAPHY and RESEARCH INTERESTS:

• Andrew grew up in Wooster, OH and graduated in May 2007 from The College of Wooster with a B.A. with honors in Geology. At Wooster, as an advisee of Dr. Robert Varga, he worked on projects utilizing paleomagnetic techniques to establish constraints on tectonic problems in both the Colorado River Extensional Corridor and in Iceland. As his senior thesis at Wooster, he used paleomagnetic analysis to demonstrate tectonic rotations of fully-oriented samples collected from the seafloor at Pito Deep, near Easter Island. In addition, he used anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) to indicate a flow direction within these seafloor samples. In the Fall of 2007, he came to Syracuse to begin work on his Ph.D in Earth Sciences.

• His research interests include the mechanisms and deformation related to extensional tectonics, particularly their manifestation at mid-ocean ridges and the resulting architecture of oceanic lithosphere. Andrew is very interested in magma flow and intrusion directions beneath mid-ocean ridges. He would like to establish constraints to how widespread lateral transport is as an accretionary mechanism, and whether it is an upper crustal phenomena or if it also occurs in the lower crust. Andrew’s current research involves using paleomagnetism and AMS to assess structures within a Tertiary flexure zone in Northern Iceland that is interpreted as a fossil rift zone. These structures observed on-land in Iceland are similar to those seen in fast-spread oceanic crust exposed in tectonic windows along the East Pacific Rise.
