RESEARCH INTERESTS

• My master’s work at Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, India involved geochemical analyses of hot spring water of eastern India. The goal was to determine the temperature of the source thermal reservoir by chemical geothermometry. During my research at SUNY Buffalo, I investigated the degradation of dissolved organic carbon in a wetland environment developed in the Northern Highland Lake Region, Wisconsin.  In this work I evaluated the fate of dissolved organic compounds originating from wetlands being transported by ground water. I discovered that the degradation is mainly controlled by rate of oxidation and the availability of electron acceptors. Continuing my interest in wetlands, I will be working on pore-water chemistry and hydrology of Glacial Lake Agassiz peatland region. This study focuses on groundwater-carbon coupling in large peat basins and its relation to climate change. Currently I am working on the acid-base chemistry of bog waters. The acidic bog water diluted by precipitation meets the upwelling basic minerotropic groundwater and gets neutralized. Understanding and quantifying this natural ‘titration’ phenomenon is keeping me occupied now.
