Research

Svalbard

I am broadly interested in just about all aspects of geology, ranging from academic to applied disciplines. Folds, faults, fossils, I like all of it!

Currently, I am in the process of formulating my M.S. research project, which will ideally combine paleobiologic and paleoecologic analysis on a specific invertebrate taxon.  I am most enthralled by sclerochronology and sclerochemistry, or the application of geochemical techniques and morphology analysis of accretionary bivalves to study past environments, based on known proxy relationships. Potential M.S. projects included sclerochemical analyses of (1) Bathymodiolus, a deep-sea mussel genus, (2) Cretaceous oysters, or (3) some local Devonian brachiopods.

Past research projects of mine have included a 2011 NSF REU with UMass-Amherst that traveled to Svalbard, Norway to study sedimentological responses to climate change in an Arctic setting, and a 2010 REU with UNC Wilmington that studied the fossil record of the Plio-Pleistocene molluscan extinctions.
